Being diagnosed with a terminal illness might enable you to access a lump sum payment from your Superannuation Insurance

Often a superannuation account will have insurance connected to it and in particular, a death benefit. If you have worked in Australia you will have received superannuation payments from your employer into your superannuation account. That superannuation builds up over your career.  Often people with a super fund account will have insurance connected to that account and in particular, a death benefit.  That death benefit insurance will often be available for access in the event you are diagnosed with a terminal illness and your doctor certifies you as having a life expectancy of less than 2 years.  A death benefit can be for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A terminal illness payment (death benefit) can be claimed in addition to accessing your superannuation balance. If you have been off work as a result of a terminal illness, you may also be able to make a claim for income protection payments via your superannuation fund.

If you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness but your life expectancy is more than 2 years or your life expectancy is unknown but you are unable to work, you may be able to make a claim for total and permanent disability (TPD) instead of a terminal illness claim.

Being able to claim a lump sum insurance payment from your super fund at a time when you need some extra money for treatment or care, or simply to support yourself and your loved ones in the final years of your life can provide much needed financial security. While you can make the claim yourself, completing the necessary paperwork and dealing with your super fund can add unnecessary stress during the time you should be spending with your family.
