What do I need to bring to my first meeting with a lawyer when making a compensation claim?

One question we are commonly asked by prospective clients is ‘what do I need to bring to my first meeting with a lawyer?’.

Each legal claim will require different documentation and evidence, and while sometimes it may be that there is nothing you need to bring to a first meeting with a lawyer, we suggest that you should consider the following:

  • Do I have any documents relevant to proving fault? (This may be in the nature of an incident report form, an injury claim form, a police report, a diary note or any written document regarding the incident causing injury).
  • Do I have any medical records or notes regarding my injuries and the extent of my injuries (such as general practitioner notes, hospital notes or medical letters or reports)?
  • Do I have the name and contact details of any potential witnesses? (If you have those details, it would be best to write them down).
  • Do I have the name and contact details of the person who caused my injury? (If you have those details, it would be best to write them down).
  • Do I have any letters/emails/sms messages between me and the person causing the injury or their insurer or lawyer?
  • Do I have any photographs or videos of the injuries or the incident causing injury?
  • Do I have any questions I want to ask the lawyer? (It is best to write down any questions to be asked to ensure they are answered at the appointment).

Whether you are seeking advice about a motor vehicle accident claim, childhood sexual abuse claim, total and permanent disability (TPD) claim, medical negligence claim, dog attack claim or public liability claim, if you consider the above matters, you will likely be well prepared for your first meeting with a lawyer.
